LASIK
LASIK Treatment what is it ?
LASIK (Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis) is the latest and most effective laser eye treatment, and takes only minutes to correct defect in both eyes. It is a revolutionary new treatment which offers hope to millions of people forced to wear contact lenses or glasses because of poor eyesight.
After a few drops of local anesthetic are administered to the eye, the eyelids are held wide open to ensure there is no interference with the laser. Then with a precise automated instrument, the ophthalmic surgeon creates a thin flap on the surface of the cornea. This is then lifted gently and the laser which is pre-programmed reshapes the inner cornea and refocuses the eyes. The pulse of the laser never last more than 60 seconds and only affects the cornea. The flap then holds itself in place after it is repositioned and healing takes place normally. No stitches are needed.
Who can benefit from LASIK
Adults within the age bracket 18 to 55, with a prescription of:
1. Myopia: minus 1 to minus 20 dioptres,
2. Hyperopia plus 1 to plus 8 dioptres,
3. Astigmatism: up to 8 dioptres.
This group, according to statistics, is about 90% of those who need glasses. However, LASIK cannot and will not treat presbyopia, which is the gradual change to eyesight which comes on as we approach our fifties. This is part of the natural ageing process where the lens in our eyes begin to lose their ability to focus at close distances. And because Presbyopia affects the lens and not the cornea, LASIK cannot be effective.
To date, LASIK is the safest and most accurate method to correct shortsightedness (myopia), longsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism (cylindrical power) and other cornea scarring disorders. LASIK is not at all a complicated procedure.
